Memoir Of The King Of War - Chapter 6
A somewhat fishy smile played on Dan Sa Yu’s face.
His father once said that his strength lay in having a heart strong enough to smile under any circumstances.
Smile for joy, smile for sorrow.
Even in the face of a crisis, he would still smile.
And he would smile while thinking desperately.
Right then, he smiled as desperate thoughts occupied his mind.
‘In our current situation, there’s nothing I can do about it…’
Dan Sa Yu bit his lower lip.
He thought of his father who was a deserter. He had been a former scout in the front line who used to spy on the enemy. He also had a natural talent for dismantling as well as setting up traps.
Dan Sa Yu was taught all those techniques by him.
He bent the branches over the narrow area he had seen on their way up and fixed them with silk thread.
Then he took out the bamboo spears he had brought with him and cut them into several pieces again.
The bamboo spears, which became as short as daggers, were firmly fastened to the end of each branch.
Then the silk thread which was too thin to be discovered at a glance was spread on the ground.
As soon as someone cut off the silk thread, the bamboo spears would appear.
Dan Sa Yu set traps every ten meters.
Although most of the traps were only basic in nature, they were almost invisible and covered by the pitch-black, thick bushes.
After setting five to six traps, Dan Sa Yu ran again at full speed towards the mountain.
‘It won’t take too much time for them to notice that we’re gone. So we need to get away from here as soon as possible.’
He thought as he dashed towards Wolf Peak.
Wolf Peak was part of the Anryeong Mountain where many wolves lived. Those wolves were so ferocious that they could not be compared to the wolves in other areas. They were the enemies of the villagers of Gung Family Village.
Dan Sa Yu was reluctant to climb the mountain itself and hide there. He had suggested climbing Wolf Peak instead.
‘We should find a way out in the most dangerous place.’
He contemplated as he moved diligently. It had not been long since it became dark. He had to get to Wolf Peak before morning. Only then could he rest assured.
He set up some more traps on his way up the mountain. Although the traps he made had a low chance of killing anyone due to their hasty installation, they could at least buy them some time.
And that would be enough for them.
Dan Sa Yu started to climb the mountain again at full speed. He knew that he would have to move at a faster speed to catch up with Gung Jeok San and Gung Mu Ae.
Dan Sa Yu ran out of breath. He felt like his heart was going to explode. Thick streams of sweat started running down his entire body. But he did not stop.
After running at full speed for some more time, he finally caught up with Gung Jeok San and Gung Mu Ae.
“You did well.”
Gung Jeok San greeted and Dan Sa Yu nodded.
“Come on, let’s move.”
“Can’t you take a short break? Even if they find our trail, it won’t be easy for them to deal with your traps.”
“It’s because I have a bad feeling. Something is off, so we must move quickly.”
Gung Jeok San and Gung Mu Ae agreed with Dan Sa Yu.
Dan Sa Yu was back in the lead, his body already soaked in sweat. But he did not seem to mind it.
They heard a wolf’s howl in the distance.
When one howled, the other wolves also started howling. It was something that would make anyone’s heart tremble with fear, but Dan Sa Yu and Gung Jeok San were the two best hunters in the Gung Family Village. For them, the wolves were nothing but prey.
They slowed down.
“Now that we’re on the wolf peak, we can rest assured for a moment.”
“That’s right! They wouldn’t dare to climb the Wolf Peak.”
The two sighed in relief.
Wolf Peak consisted of sharp rocks and lots of cliffs. It was not the kind of place weak people would dare to step in.
They believed that no matter how persistent the villagers were, they would not be able to track them there.
Gung Mu Ae sighed as she seemed more relaxed.
She said, “I’m sorry. Because of me, even Sa Yu………”
“Haha! Noona, what are you talking about? We’re like brothers and sisters, so of course, I would help!”
Dan Sa Yu’s eyes looked like he wanted to say a lot of things. But in the end, he only touched Gung Jeok San’s shoulders and said,
“This guy is my best friend, and noona is like my own sister. So don’t say that.”
Both Gung Jeok San and Gung Ma Ae smiled at what he said.
Although the people with the same surname as Gung Jeok San and Gung Mu Ae treated him differently, Dan Sa Yu still showed them an unwavering affection.
Both of them were grateful for that.
“I heard that Yuan is on the verge of collapsing and they came here themselves to look for a court lady.”
“But it doesn’t matter now. We’re out of the Gung Family Village and they won’t be able to find us.”
“I know, but it’s strange………”
Dan Sa Yu stopped talking.
The expression on Gung Jeok San’s face had become tense.
They were hunters. Therefore, they were more sensitive than anyone else when it came to the movements of animals. Even while they laughed, smiled, and talked, they never stopped being attentive towards the animal energy they could feel around them, and at that moment, they could feel a strange kind of animal energy.
It was the energy of a beast the kind of which did not exist there in the Nangrim Mountains.
They slowly turned.
And they could finally see them.
Their eyes were shining like lamps in pitch-black darkness.
Dan Sa Yu and Gung Jeok San stood up to protect Gung Mu Ae. They realized that they had no way but to fight in order to protect her.
One of the men spoke, “What a load of bastards!”
He spoke in an awkward Goryeo Accent.
Judging from that, they seemed to be with the envoy who had come to their village.
Tension spread in the minds of Dan Sa Yu and Gung Jeok San.
There were quite a few traps set on the way up. The fact that those men could still come there without any injury was enough to show how capable they were.
“Thanks to the traps, several villagers were hurt and even revealed this place…”
A man in his forties and dressed as a Yuan soldier said. He seemed to be their interpreter.
A man behind his back said something. However, Gung Jeok San and Dan Sa Yu could not understand anything he said.
As they stood there confused, the interpreter said,
“Haha! He says that he will forgive both of you if you hand us the woman.”
On hearing this, Gung Mu Ae’s face became pale.
“There’s no way we’ll do that. You’ll have to knock the two of us down to take our sister.”
Dan Sa Yu said as he took out the bow from behind and demonstrated.
It was a dazzling and quick move.
Gung Jeok San also took out his axe and was ready to fight.
“Hoho! Both of you are surprisingly skilled.”
The face of the interpreter turned cold as he exclaimed.
At that moment, Dan Sa Yu and Gung Jeok San felt their bodies going stiff.
They had been hunting animals for a long time, but nothing had ever made them feel like that.
They had never encountered warriors like them before.
They realized that their opponents were far more dangerous than they had expected.
The men behind the interpreter said that the response of the two was quite good.
They had never seen boys their age who could react so quickly even when they had not mastered martial arts.
When one of the men behind said something, the interpreter would translate it to them.
“Fighting back is useless. You don’t have to worry. Your sister will be treated well because she’s a beauty. So….”
“Don’t be ridiculous. Do you think I would hand my sister to Yuan warriors like you?”
Gung Jeok San ran forward, cutting off the words of the interpreter.
Although he was just a young boy, the sight of him running towards them with an axe and a body bigger than normal adults gave off a great sense of pressure.
Dan Sa Yu shot an arrow while Gung Jeok San ran without stopping.
The arrow flew at an insane speed and passed by Gung Jeok San, heading straight for the interpreter.
But the arrow expected to hit the interpreter fell on the ground.
Dan Sa Yu was surprised but he kept firing more arrows one after another. They were too fast for ordinary people to follow.
There was amazement in the eyes of the men behind the interpreter. They could not believe how a boy who was not even skilled in martial arts could do such things.
But nothing changed.
The arrow bounced in vain again.
The warriors were skilled enough to avoid his arrows.
It was actually very strange for an envoy to follow them after they had come to their village.
The axe of Gung Jeok San clashed with the interpreter’s sword. His axe was quite heavy but the interpreter did not even budge. His eyes blazed fiercely.
“How dare you choose punishment and refuse our offer!”
He pushed away Gung Jeok San’s axe and aimed for his neck with his sword.
He heard something and hastily turned his head just as a bamboo spear passed by, cutting his hair.
An angry expression darkened his face.
In that moment of crisis, Dan Sa Yu had come forward to help his friend with a bamboo spear in his hand.
He ran towards the interpreter holding a bamboo spear in his hand and a dagger in his mouth.
Although they were not trained in martial arts, both Dan Sa Yu and Gung Jeok San possessed extraordinary skills and energy.
Clank Clank Clank!
The interpreter was being pushed back as a series of metal noises burst out.
The rest of the men did not react as they watched their ally getting pushed back.
Rather, they seemed to be amused and interested.
“It’s amazing how kids who aren’t trained in Martial Arts can do this much.”
A man answered politely.
“It’s a pity. If only they weren’t from Goryeo, I could’ve raised them.”
There was a cruel expression on the man’s face.
Then his eyes turned to Gung Mu Ae who stood shivering on the side.
“That woman will have a wonderful baby, with great qualities and outstanding beauty.”
A smile of satisfaction appeared on his face.
Gung Mu Ae was exactly the type of woman he and his higher-ups were looking for.
Many envoys were scattered all over the place in search of a woman like her and after seeing her, he had felt confident that he would be able to accomplish the mission on that very day.
As the sound of metal clashing against metal rang out, an absurd expression appeared on the interpreter’s face.
Those were certainly children who did not have a trace of mastery in martial arts, but the strength they possessed was better than ordinary warriors. He could not estimate how much they had trained.
When Gung Jeok San swung his axe with great power, Dan Sa Yu stabbed with the bamboo spear from the back.
It was just a simple stabbing without any special technique but it was fast and accurate, and the interpreter even suffered a minor injury.
“Ugh! You brats!”
Eventually, the interpreter’s eyes were filled with anger.
Although he was an interpreter, he was also a skilled warrior who used to travel around a lot. He was not a man to be beaten by some insignificant children.
He attacked Gung Jeok San back.
Gung Jeok San tried his best but his body could not overcome the shock and he was pushed back.
As his feet slid they dug into the ground.
“Hang in there!”
Dan Sa Yu shouted to encourage Gung Jeok San and attacked the interpreter with the bamboo spear.
However, the interpreter easily avoided his spear and attacked him with his sword.
Because of his strength, his sword attack was heavy.
Dan Sa Yu tried to block it with the bamboo spear but the attack went through.
Looking at the bamboo spear getting destroyed in front of his eyes, Dan Sa Yu bit his lips.
He screamed out. He had realized that they would never win against those warriors.
They had to struggle resisting only one warrior. If the other four intervened, they would die for sure.
It was quite obvious what the fate of Gung Mu Ae would be like. But they could not imagine such a situation.
As Gung Mu Ae hesitated, Gung Jeok San shouted.
His screams made Gung Mu Ae’s body tremble. She looked at the two and soon turned to run away.
“How dare you!”
The men who were just watching till then burst out in anger and ran out to catch Gung Mu Ae.
The interpreter felt a fiery pain on his side.
The man murmured in disbelief.
The bamboo spear had pierced his side.
Although his body was hard enough not to be easily pierced and burned, the damage it received from that attack was obvious.
The fact that an expert like him was hurt by a surprise attack from a mere kid who had not even learned martial arts, angered him.
Dan Sa Yu tried to stand properly even though he was panting hard. The interpreter’s sword had pierced his side again and his mouth was slightly agape.
He even sacrificed his body to stop the man.
The burning pain seared through his body.
Dan Sa Yu put all his efforts into keeping his swaying body upright.
“No one can take our sister! If you want to take her you’ll have to take us down first!” The cry of Gung Jeok San echoed throughout the Wolf Peak.
For the first time, a man in the envoy laughed.
Although his face was covered by his hair, one could tell that his laugh was a mockery.
Even the other warriors shuddered at his laugh and kept their serious expressions.
To Be Continued.
